– Sing for Your Life ! –
Raise your hand if you have not suffered for love! Unrequited, impossible, or secret love is the theme of this programme. It weaves together opera arias from the early days of Venetian public theatre: in the 17th century with cantatas for solo voice, and basso continuo from the 18th century! The characters we meet are not the type to feel sorry for themselves! Each of them is angry and belligerent, and tells us about different strategies of revenge. The anonymous protagonist of Stradella’s cantata describes a furious amorous apocalypse in which the stars fall, wine becomes poison, mythological heroes go to war with each other, and the world seems to fall apart. Would it not be better to avoid falling in love? Perhaps not, concludes Vivaldi’s cantata, because even if suffering love is similar to a gale in which we feel like a boat in distress, a smile from the beloved will suffice to reassure us and restore our peace and hope, “like calm in the sea.”
